Families with children on the River
Getting out of the big smoke of Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and beyond will do the whole family a great benefit and I cant think of a better way to do it then on the pristine rivers of the Mitta or Murray.
We love sharing our river experiences with the kids and see the amazing benefits of families spending time together, bonding in the wilderness but there are some considerations that need to be addressed when planning your trip. The general rule is young ones need to weight a min of 30kgs to be correctly fitted into our white water rated buoyancy jackets.
They need to be able to understand and follow direction from our guides along with parent’s participation and cooperation.
Think about what time of the year weather wise will be appropriate to keep your child comfortable in the great outdoors. Eg: if you have small children and you want to come in the middle of winter with a possibility of them falling in the water… it’s not easy for them to warm up quickly and you would be better to schedule your trip in the spring to summer season.
Back in the Office
Once we had a call from a parent who wanted to bring a 2 year old on a grade 5 adventure. My answer was a polite “perhaps you should wait a few years” and I’m sorry but we don’t have a trip suitable. Please think about what you’re asking us not only as tour operators but parents and responsible adults ourselves. If you think it’s a really dumb idea or pushing things a bit far then it probably is!
What to bring?
If you booking during the winter spring season, please take note of your itinerary that will recommend that you wear thermals and fleece not cotton under your wetsuits that we provide. Glasses strap, sunscreen, warm change of clothes and its always handy to have a spare bottle of water on hand to keep hydrated.
If your kids are fussy eaters or have allergies, please let us know as soon as you can so that we can cater or recommend that you bring something extra along to pack for lunch.
Other than this by all means book the family in for your next adventure with us and come with a sense of adventure as you will leave with a memory of a life time.
See you on the river soon.
